Support the Kansas Marriage Amendment, April 5

CHECK’s mission is to further the interests of private home education in Kansas . One of means is to accomplish this is by advocating for home education in the state and federal legislatures and other relevant organizations. We believe that actions with strengthen marriage and the family serves the interest of home education.

On April 5, Kansans will have an opportunity to vote on an amendment to its state constitution that will define marriage in the traditional way, as a civil contract between a man and a woman. The proposed amendment to the Kansas Constitution will add a new section on marriage which would state:

"(a) The marriage contract is to be considered in law as a civil contract. Marriage shall be constituted by one man and one woman only. All other marriages are declared to be contrary to the public policy of this state and are void.
"(b) No relationship, other than a marriage, shall be recognized by the state as entitling the parties to the rights or incidents of marriage."

No doubt you have heard much on the subject already and the “discussion” will intensify with each week and day as April 5 approaches. I live in Lawrence and our paper has a regular letters to the editor that label those who favor the traditional definition of marriage as fearful bigots. They don’t see how broadening the definition of marriage to weakens it.

The amendment would take the existing law of our state, which already defines marriage as between one man and one woman and put this definition in our state constitution. Why is this needed? To keep an activist judge for declaring the law unconstitutional. Don’t doubt the day will come.

We would encourage you to inform yourself on this issue and to get involved. Web sites with helpful resources include:

On these sites you will find background information, bulletin inserts, links to information on voter registration and obtain yard signs, and where to contribute money to this cause.

If you feel strongly about this issue, we encourage you to help get out the vote, as this will likely determine whether the amendment passes or fails. This vote should not be taken for granted. Here are a few things you can do:

·        Encourage your church to put one or more of the inserts in it Sunday bulletins. The inserts can be found on the sites above and there is nothing to prevent a church from being involved in this non-partisan issue.

·        Put up a yard sign and help distribute them to others (see One Voice Kansas site for distribute locations)

·        Educate your self on the issue, download one or more of the re-printable material handouts on these web sites, and pass out literature in your neighborhood. The gay community of Topeka uses this strategy effectively in a recent special election and won. And they plan to use it again for this vote.

·        Contact One Voice Kansas to find out how to help with grass-roots organization in your neighborhood.

·        Pray
